Whenever we land somewhere out of the country, we have got in the habit of doing some very specific things. I feel like these things really do help you start the trip off on the right foot.
First thing we always do, which everyone does, is collect our luggage. These days I feel like everyone has the same luggage, so we bought these luggage tags to help ours really stand out. We get more compliments on these.
Next we buy a local sim card. If I remember correctly, the first time we bought a local sim card was is Sri Lanka. Best thing we ever did! Now we do it everywhere. Normally you will buy it right outside of baggage claim, if not you can always buy one in town. With buying a local sim card, not only do you have good service everywhere, but being in a foreign country you never know what could happen so it is a good safety net. Also, international plans can be expensive. These SIM cards are so affordable and we have never even been close to running out of data. (Just make sure you warn your family/friends that you will be texting them from a completely different number) I facetimed my friend from Sri Lanka and she was wondering why someone from there was trying to facetime her and got creeped out. Oops.
Last thing we do before we get collected is change some of our money to the local currency. If you didn’t already do this back home, now is a good time to do so. Honestly, we don’t ever change our money at our local bank, we always wait till we are in country.
If you wind up trying any of these steps above, let me know how it works for you.
